Daily Reading of the Scriptures

As we near difficult times, one of the best ways to prepare is to memorize scripture. This will be a great blessing to us as well as to those around us.

Put away the foolish reading matter and study the Word of God. Commit its precious promises to memory so that when we shall be deprived of our Bibles we may still be in possession of the Word of God.–Ms 85, 1909, p. 10. (Lessons of Self-denial, Trust and Cooperation,” Sermon preached in Nevada, Iowa, August 21, 1909.)

Crayons = Candle

Ok, let me explain. If you have kids, or know anyone who does, there is probably an overabundance of crayons lying around the house. Believe it or not, you can use a crayon as an emergency candle when the power goes out.

  • First, you need some crayons – the nontoxic ones are best.
  • Next, locate a fireproof base – a small plate works well.
  • Use a match or lighter to melt some wax off the top of the crayon and drip it in the center of the base. Quickly stick the crayon in the wax. This will help the crayon to stand up right on the base.
  • Once the crayon is stuck to the base, simply light the top of the crayon. Important, do not remove the paper sleeve because it acts like a wick and enables the crayon to burn. Be sure to keep the flame from your lighter on top of the candle for 5-10 seconds – long enough for the paper to catch fire.

The standard size crayons burn for about 10 minutes. It isn’t a bad idea to keep a pack of crayons around. They are good for keeping kids entertained and, who knows, you may use them as a backup light source or emergency fire starter.

Firebox: Now you're cookin'.

Have you ever had a power outage and found yourself unable to cook a meal or heat up some food?  A portable and light weight camp stove might be a good solution for that problem.  There are many camping stoves you can choose from, but an easy one to use is called the Firebox camp stove. It is light weight, foldable, easy to set up and as fuel you can either use a small fuel canister or sticks and small branches to cook up a meal! I have used it for camping but for a power outage it would be a great solution.

Lavender

In addition to its sweet, floral smell, lavender has therapeutic and medical benefits. These include reducing symptoms of anxiety. Various research indicates that lavender can help reduce anxiety levels and can be used in a variety of ways, including massage, aromatherapy, baths, décor, or in recipes.
For an easy tip, try placing 2-3 drops of essential oil  on your pillow before going to sleep. The smell will not only help you sleep better, it will also have a soothing effect.
